OBJECTIVE: Students will learn proper crucible techniques in order to find the empirical formula of a magnesium
and oxygen compound.
Today students, you will determine the empirical formula of
a compound of magnesium and oxygen by heating a magnesium ribbon to a high temperature until all of the magnesium has reacted
with atmospheric oxygen. You will use the Excel spreadsheet to record and calculate
your data, and a web based calculation utility to help guide your empirical formula calculations.
1. Go to the website for the lab and make a functioning Excel
spreadsheet matching the data table in the lab.
2. Perform the lab and enter data into the spreadsheet.
3. Go to the Empricial Formula Calculation Web Utility
to guide you in making your calculations for the proper formula.
